Jaime Kay Newton, who owns and runs Top of Tacoma with Jason J. Jones, has gone floral with her cocktails. St. Germain has been showing up on cocktail menus around town for months – from the new(ish) 1022 South to Maxwell’s Speakeasy + Lounge.
Newton said it’s the flavor profile that makes St. Germain elderflower liqueur such an interesting ingredient. “It’s really floral, we’ve done a lot of experimenting with it. It goes nicely with grapefruit juice,” said Newton. As of late, she’s been mixing a grapefruit infused Finlandia vodka with St. Germain.....
“We do a couple different versions of martinis with elderflower,” said Newton. “We do one that’s called the St. Monica (Monica is one of our bartenders). Monica is also the patron saint of booze,” cracked Newton. Indeed, there’s something to be liked about Monica (the bartender and the patron saint). Because of the floral notes of St. Germain, it’s not a good match for anything with an overly strong flavor, and your palate will know immediately if the flavor works. Newton recommended either grapefruit juice orgrapefruit infused vodka

made by Finlandia. The flavor of the liqueur has hints of sweet fruit and musky flowers (it tastes better than that sounds). I liken it to drinking cocktails made with lavender simple syrup or rose water.

Stir together ingredients and shake over ice. Serve it like a martini.
