Gig Harbor just got a whole lot sweeter. A frozen yogurt shop and a dessert bakery have opened. I’ll write more tomorrow about Yo! G’s Frozen Yogurt - along with seven other frozen yogurt shops either already open or about to open - but here are the details on Sweet Melissa’s, a cupcake and dessert bakery that opened this week at Uptown Gig Harbor.
Jessica Beers remembers family and friends coveting her mother’s holiday treats - handmade fondant coated sugar cookies. “They’d put them on the Christmas tree instead of eating them, they were so pretty,” recalled Beers, who is working alongside her mother, siblings and an aunt at Sweet Melissa’s, a bakery named after her mother who has had a two-decade dream of opening a dessert bakery. The small shop is near the Galaxy movie theater.
Cake baking for Melissa Beers stretches back as far as Jessica’s memory. She recalls her mother’s special occasion cakes and lots of cupcakes. The family was military - father Sid Beers was an Air Force doctor - and they moved about the country. The one constant for every move was Melissa Beers making friends and baking cakes. After travels that took the family to New York and beyond, the Beers family returned to Gig Harbor. Both Melissa and Sid Beers have family here. Sid Beers grew up in Auburn where he now practices medicine at Auburn Regional Medical Center.
Expect the dessert bakery to serve those fondant wrapped cookies ($2.50), but there also will be cupcakes ($3.25), cream puffs and gluten-free cookies ($2). The bakery has about 40 cupcake flavors, with 6-8 revolving daily flavors. To open, the bakery will serve vanilla, chocolate, raspberry red velvet, orange chiffon, coconut and carrot cake cupcakes. They’ll serve French Press coffee from Tacoma’s Bluebeard Roasters and tea from Tacoma’s Mad Hatter Teas. Coming soon will be ice cream from Olympic Mountain.
Specialty cakes are available by advance order.
