Fried pickles in Puyallup, anyone? The Loose Wheel, a sports bar on Sixth Avenue in Tacoma, is duplicating its concept and opening an outpost on Puyallup’s River Road.
Loose Wheel owner Shawn DeCicco, who also owns the Summit Pub on Canyon in Puyallup, said he’s aiming for opening his second Loose Wheel in time for the start of football season, but he might miss by a game or two. I talked to him today by phone as he was standing in the quiet of what used to be O’Henry’s, a sports bar that closed about six months ago, which will be the new home for the Loose Wheel Puyallup. He'll rework the O'Henry's space, adding plenty of new television panels for sports viewing, he said. Much like the Loose Wheel in Tacoma, which DeCicco opened in March 2010, the primary pastime besides beer and burgers will be watching sports.
The food and concept will remain the same at the outpost - burgers and bar food (I’m partial to Loose Wheel’s fried pickles, a Southern dish that can be difficult to find in these parts). Because the space has pizza ovens, DeCicco said the Puyallup restaurant will have a lengthier pizza menu than the Sixth location (pizzas there are made on flatbread). Here’s a twist and one that’s probably to be expected in a family town like Puyallup - under-21 diners will be allowed until 9 p.m. DeCicco said he’s been eager to have a restaurant and bar that allows for family dining so that his own two children can dine there - something they can’t do at his other two bars. Like the Loose Wheel in Tacoma, the Puyallup bar will offer weekend breakfasts. DeCicco is thinking about opening the Loose Wheel in Puyallup daily for breakfast.
