Today is opening day for The Hub at Gig Harbor, one of three notable restaurants opening in Gig Harbor between now and the end of the year.
Business partners Pat Nagle and Carole Holder have imported to Gig Harbor their Hub concept from Tacoma's St. Helens neighborhood. That bike-themed restaurant offers pizza, sandwiches and burgers in a casual, sprawling space that sports a dining room friendly to group seating and an open-air bar with roll-up garage doors.
The Hub and Harmon are all part of the same family of restaurants-slash-pubs founded in 1997 by Nagle, a Tacoma native. That year, the Foss High School graduate opened his brewery and restaurant in downtown Tacoma. More than a decade later, he opened the Hub restaurant in 2008 with business partner Carole Holder. And 2010 saw the opening of neighboring working brewery and restaurant, the Harmon Taproom. As the restaurant side of the business has grown, so has Harmon beer production. In recent years, Harmon has begun distributing its beers to stores across the Northwest.
The Hub at Gig Harbor is located at the Narrows Airport where Reflections once operated – and marks the restaurant and brewery’s first venture away from an urban locale to a suburban domain.
Expect a menu that will nearly duplicate what’s offered at the St. Helens Hub Restaurant. Pizza, burgers, sandwiches and a few pasta dishes will be served for lunch and dinner. Weekend breakfasts will mirror what the Hub and Harmon Brewery downtown offer – eggs Benedict, chicken fried steak and biscuits and gravy.
Managing the Hub at Gig Harbor will be Erin McCloskey, who most recently managed a B.J.’s Brewhouse. In the kitchen are two chefs Gig Harbor locals will remember from Kelly’s and other Harbor restaurants – head chef Lucas Ortiz and consulting chef Jeremy Barber. Aimee Cox, a Gig Harbor resident, will serve as sous chef.
The 80-seat restaurant will have a seasonal patio with seating for all ages. The full-service bar will seat about 20. On tap will be Harmon beer, as well as rotating taps from local craft breweries.

The Seattle-based Lunchbox Laboratory will be joining the burgeoning burger landscape in the Harbor, which already is home to Northwest-based Blazing Onion and the recently relocated Gourmet Burger Shop, which opened in June. Owners of the Lunchbox Laboratory, with an outpost in Seattle and Bellevue, thought they would open at the end of September, but recently pushed an opening date to around Oct. 14. The restaurant has built a national following for its duck and pork “dork” burger and gets extra points from me for offering a house-made veggie patty option (the-mix-and-match menu is pretty interesting). The diner’s other locations offer table service. The Lunchbox Laboratory decor relies heavy on vintage lunchboxes that harken to simpler times when the Smurfs, Mork and Mindy and the Krofft Superstars ruled our television sets.

The owners of Mana Sushi in Port Orchard are bringing their sushi to Gig Harbor, in the same complex near Safeway where Lunchbox Laboratory will operate. Co-owner Jason Shin described Domo Sushi as a 60-seatrestaurant with a sushi counter and table service. Expect the food to mirror something much like what’s served at their Port Orchard restaurant.
Harbor sushi tip: If you haven’t tried the expertly crafted sushi at Bistro Satsuma in Gig Harbor, you need to get yourself there.
