Now open in Lakewood - Memo’s, a fast food Mexican restaurant that advertises 24-hour dining.
Memo's is new to the South Sound and part of a chain with locations in Seattle, Everett and Yakima. A second South Sound Memo’s is expected to open at 1703 Sixth Ave., Tacoma.
Here’s a strange connection other than that both South Sound Memo’s locations straddle awkward intersections and come with cramped parking lots - both Memo’s are in buildings that previously held Greek restaurants.
A first-bite visit at the Lakewood Memo’s found a menu with economy eats around $2-$7. The building has a drive-thru. There’s a salsa bar in the dining room. Taqueria regulars will pinpoint immediately that taco prices seem high - $2.75-$2.79 each - but they’re built on six-inch corn tortillas. I stuck with the basics - carnitas and adobada tacos, dressed with onions and cilantro. If we’re talking budget tacos, they were fine, but not as polished as the carnitas and adobada tacos at Taqueria El Antojo in Lakewood (tacos there are $1.26 each, but smaller).
Worth noting: Curious about the chain new to South Sound, I took a trip to the Memo’s in Seattle’s University District neighborhood and was served food that sort of resembled Mexican cuisine. The carnitas were bland and tasted boiled, the burrito plate was littered with shredded iceberg and orange cheese, a torta was squishy and cold. Lakewood Memo’s was an improvement.
Tip: San Diego transplants will relish that Memo’s serves carne asada fries ($5.50), a regional specialty in southern California.
