South Hill - the South Sound mecca for chain restaurants - has two new restaurants from national chains that don't have many locations here. Today is the opening of Jersey Mike's, a Jersey-based chain serving sub sandwiches. Opening last week in South Hill was Dickey's Barbecue Pit, a recent newcomer to South Sound. Here's a bit more detail about both, as well as an update about a Washington-based burger and beer chain opening in South Hill later this year.
Jersey Mike's opened in Bonney Lake several years ago, but has not seen a surge in store openings until recently. Franchise owner Jeff Gates brought Jersey Mike's sandwich shop to Gig Harbor in July and his most recent location is in Puyallup. The next location is planned for Silverdale. If you've never eaten at Jersey Mike's, it's an East Coast style sandwich shop that serves a variety of hot and cold subs. They make a mean Philly and Reuben - and offer a pretty decent value. Find the Puyallup South Hill location at 4009 S. Meridian, 253-435-0000.
Dickey's Barbecue Pit opened in Bonney Lake in November 2011, but it took two years for another store to materialize in East Pierce. Puyallup's opening brings the casual barbecue restaurant to South Hill. It's an order-at-the-counter restaurant with casual seating (read: no table service). Think of it as Famous Dave's meets McDonald's. A first-bite visit a few years ago when Bonney Lake opened showed adequate barbecue, but it's a different style of eating than Brank's or Uncle' Thurm's. (In fact, read this rib report for the best ribs around the South Sound). Find Dickey's at 3932 Meridian, 253-845-5061.
Coming soon to South Hill - Bob's Burgers and Brews. I wrote about the restaurant in August here, but to recap: Ground broke July 23 for the 6,100 square feet building, which will have a 48-seat banquet room and patio. Bob’s is known in Western Washington, but you’ll have to head north to find the closest one. It was founded in 1982 in Lynden, then expanded to Bellingham, then sprawled southward down I-5 to Marysville and Everett. The restaurant also franchised to central Washington – with locations in Kennewick and Yakima.
Never miss a local story.
Pierce County franchise owner Jeff Roberts said he has plans to expand elsewhere in the county. Expect a menu of flame-broiled burgers, steaks and beer taps. Bob’s will be in a new building located across Meridian from the Sunrise Village Shopping Center. It'll open late this year or early next.
While South Hill appears to be the home for chains, downtown Puyallup dining is getting even better. Coming soon to Meridian will be Salsa 7, a modern Mexican restaurant, and Bourbon Street Bar and Grill, a New Orleans themed steakhouse. I'll have a blog post soon about those restaurants, as well as a new steakhouse planning to open downtown.
