News of Veltins Bierhalle, a German pub and eatery, opening in downtown Tacoma made me eager for schnitzel and dunkel, but we're still waiting for that opening. The good news - it's still a go, but with a caveat. An opening has been pushed to 2014. And remember that downtown Puyallup Louisiana-themed eatery that's been in the works for months and months? It's opening soon. An Italian restaurant and a pub also are closer to opening in downtown Tacoma. Here are updates on all.
Dennis and Lydia Mascarinas had planned to open this summer their Veltins Bierhalle, a family friendly pub and eatery modeled after their popular Berliner Pub, which they built out of a derelict building in downtown Renton. In Tacoma, they intended to follow a similar course when they took ownership of the derelict building at the corner of 24th and Pacific in Tacoma's old brewery district. By mid-2013, that deadline had been pushed to the end of 2013. The snag has been the architectural process, which has been productive but lengthy, said Dennis Mascarinas. They now expect a 2014 opening.
I know what you're thinking, "Tell me where to get German food NOW." Never fear, I'm here to help. For now, head to Hess Bakery and Deli in Lakewood for a great selection of German brews (by the bottle), freshly baked pretzels and an impressive deli case (get the landjaeger). For German food and beer on tap, you must eat at Bruno's in Parkland. You might already know this, but they're famous now, thanks to a little show called Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

Bourbon Street Bar and Grill, the Louisiana themed restaurant opening in downtown Puyallup, is in its final inspections. Look for an opening very soon. The bulk of the menu will be steaks and seafood, served Cajun style. When in season, the restaurant will serve crawfish. And, this is neat. Po' boy sandwiches are on the menu. Read more about the restaurant in this blog post. Find Bourbon Street at 401 S. Meridian, Puyallup.
Cafe Vincero is still plugging along with infrastructure work to an old building that needed upgrading. It's been fun to watch owner Kevin Cornwell update his Facebook followers with incremental construction news. Read updates here. Find Cafe Vincero at 714 Pacific Ave., Tacoma. The restaurant will be in a neighborhood that's a neat entertainment destination (Orange Door, Tacoma Cabana, Meconi's, Matador, Dorky's Arcade, The Office and two great sandwich spots are within steps).
