Taprooms and breweries sometimes pop up in the oddest locations, sometime even home garages. Dan Sowers' new Outlaw Ales is one of those nano breweries that's a completely homegrown operation. Don't let the name fool you, he just received his state licensing to sell beer out of the garage of his Bonney Lake Home. His first keg will be tapped at noon Saturday.
On tap Saturday will be a blackberry ale and an amber. He's working on a spiced holiday brown ale next. Taproom hours will be noon-6 p.m. Saturday. I asked Sowers a few questions about his tiny home-based brewery. Here are his answers, via email:
Q: Where'd you come up with your brewery name?A: I've been brewing beer for about five years now but decided to open my own brewery about a year ago. I came up with the name Outlaw Ales because a friend of mine once said I should run my brewery under the table and be an "outlaw." I guess the name kinda stuck. I am the head brewmaster and work alone. With my one-barrel system, it's really just a one-man show.
Never miss a local story.
Q: Tell readers about your taproom.A: The taproom is currently in my garage. I try to keep a relaxed environment where good people can drink good beer and enjoy the company of others. Seating is limited. I have a wrap-around bar with a separate standing bar in the taproom. If folks need to sit down I can always find a chair or a round of firewood to sit on. I can fit about 30 people in the taproom.
Q: What are your flagship beers going to be?A: I don't have any flagship beers yet but I'm always coming out with different beer styles and trying new things. I hope to have a lineup of 2-3 flagship beers soon with a few seasonal brews mixed in. The grand opening will include a blackberry ale and an amber beer. I'm working on a spiced holiday brown ale after that.
Q: Do you have food at your taproom?A: I do allow outside food of course but I do occasionally have my friend Darryl Coker bring his famous barbecue and cater the guests at the taproom.
The taproom is at 20406 96th St E., Bonney Lake. Find more information on Outlaw Ales here.
