Proctor restaurant, Soul, is creating a second southern food outpost. The new location will open in November across the street from Tacoma Community College in a strip mall space that formerly housed I Love Bento.
Soul co-owners Natural Allah and Jennifer Zaskorski have brought on a new business partner, Talya Miller, who will manage the Soul University Place (named after the city located a few blocks away, although the new Soul will be within the city of Tacoma).
Miller will act as one of the chefs of the restaurant, assisted by her three adult children: daughter LaShon Lewis and sons Charlie and Scott Humphrey. Also in the kitchen will be Oneal Gamble, who staffers call “Papa” because of his ability to fix everything from a plate of fried chicken to a car or a light fixture.
This is Miller’s second restaurant. She previously co-owned a Seattle southern restaurant, but has spent most of her professional life running a foster home and teaching related classes.

The 77-seat restaurant will be similar in concept to Soul, but Miller said, “There won’t be Latin food; we’ll focus more on the soul food side.”
The original Soul opened in Proctor in August 2013 as a hybrid restaurant featuring soul food and Latin cuisine, including Puerto Rican, Cuban and Peruvian dishes.
