Peninsula High School has made quite an impact on Ken Asplund’s family throughout the years. Asplund’s father, a painter, worked on the building’s construction in the 1940s, and the Asplund siblings graduated from the school in 1962, ’66, ’71 and ’78, respectively. Ken is the youngest.

Tyler McNamer didn’t start to speak in full sentences until he was about 10, his father, Jody, remembers. Now, as a senior in high school, Tyler has written an entire book, an exploration of his life with autism.

“The Woodpecker Menace,” a book from Gig Harbor’s Plicata Press, is subtitled “Stories from an Accidentally Unseparated Island.” The book is the combined effort of author Ted Olinger and artist Tweed Meyer, two Key Peninsula residents who sought to capture the feeling of living in an isolated, island-like part of the world.

Karina Robertson was a Gig Harbor High School student, active in Young Life and the varsity swim team, when she was diagnosed with leukemia at age 14. When she needed a stem cell transplant, her sister Annika was a perfect match, giving her three more years of life.
