Pirouette dances back to sea

After years of being restored at the Eddon Boatyard, the Pirouette sat in a cradle on the shore of Gig Harbor Bay on Saturday afternoon, awaiting the rising tide. The boat was the second of the Thunderbird sailboats crafted at the boatyard, one of the original designs that, after a few adjustments, became the prototype for all other Thunderbirds.

Alumni of Distinction shine

Each year, The Peninsula Gateway, in cooperation with its sponsors and the Peninsula School District, recognizes students and alumni who have distinguished themselves in their lifetime achievements. Lacey police Sgt. David Campbell, a Gig Harbor High School graduate, and theatre performer Micheal O’Hara, a Peninsula High School graduate, will be honored tonight as part of the 10th annual Students and Alumni of Distinction banquet.

Stars shine at women's business awards ceremony

More than 200 people attended the Alliance of Women Owned Business' first Crystal Star Awards dinner at Canterwood Golf & Country Club on Thursday to see which two entrepreneurs would walk away winners.

Jaime Storkman, the Gig Harbor BoatShop lead on the Pirouette boat restoration, gives the historic Thunderbird No. 2 a cleaning Tuesday at the Eddon Boatyard in downtown Gig Harbor. The newly restored vessel will be the star this Saturday at an all-day event for the public. The sailboat will be launched by volunteers. ()

Thunderbird No. 2 to return to the bay

One of Gig Harbor's original Thunderbird sailboats, the Pirouette, was set to return to the water Saturday during a celebration at the Eddon Boatyard.

Livable fair showcases Key Peninsula

The ninth annual Key Peninsula Livable Community Fair was held Saturday at the Key Peninsula Civic Center in Vaughn. “Maybe it was the weather,” said Phil Bauer, one of the event organizers, “but I think this is the largest attendance we’ve ever had.” The fair offered everything from a trout pond, which had been stocked with 100 fish the previous night, to “Truck Touch,” a field display of all sorts of large equipment which featured huge equipment-moving units from Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Tilli the aardvark tiptoed across the stage at the Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. Even though each foot is equipped with thick, massive claws for digging in the earth to find insects, she took each step with the grace of a ballerina.

The Washington Corrections Center for Women recently celebrated its Prison Pet Partnership Program graduation. Recipients of the graduated animals each participated in the training process and were part of the ceremonies along with the program’s inmate trainers.
