Residents concerned about future logging on the Key Peninsula can attend a meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. May 24 at the Key Peninsula Civic Center in Vaughn. The meeting will be hosted by the Key Peninsula Community Council.

Pirouette dances back to sea

After years of being restored at the Eddon Boatyard, the Pirouette sat in a cradle on the shore of Gig Harbor Bay on Saturday afternoon, awaiting the rising tide. The boat was the second of the Thunderbird sailboats crafted at the boatyard, one of the original designs that, after a few adjustments, became the prototype for all other Thunderbirds.

Tolls to go up July 1

It became official Monday night: It's going to cost more to cross the Tacoma Narrows Bridge this summer. Following a final public hearing on the proposal at the Gig Harbor Civic Center, the Washington State Transportation Commission adopted new toll rates as follows: increasing electronic Good to Go! tolls to $4 from $2.75, cash tolls to $5 from $4, and pay-by-mail tolls to $6 from $5.50.

Each year, The Peninsula Gateway, in cooperation with its sponsors and the Peninsula School District, recognizes students and alumni who have distinguished themselves in their lifetime achievements. Lacey police Sgt. David Campbell, a Gig Harbor High School graduate, and theatre performer Micheal O’Hara, a Peninsula High School graduate, will be honored tonight as part of the 10th annual Students and Alumni of Distinction banquet.

Challengers to state reps file for 26th District seats

Two 26th Legislative District state representatives will face challenges to their re-election bids as filing week came to a close on Friday. The 26th district takes in parts of north Pierce County, including Gig Harbor, and south-central Kitsap County, including Port Orchard and parts of Bremerton.

Fire reports

May 10 — Crews responded to Lake of the Woods neighborhood for a 64-year-old man who was experiencing chest pain. The man's daughter called 9-1-1 when her father began to feel poorly. A Key Peninsula Fire Department crew from the Wauna station responded, and they treated and transported the man to St. Anthony Hospital for further care and evaluation.

Science fair project attempts to slow effects of erosion

Sky Bressette, a seventh-grader at Key Peninsula Middle School, placed first in his category at the state Science and Engineering Fair on March 31. His experiment about types of plants in sod and how well they protected a hillside from erosion was inspired when he saw erosion along the Key Peninsula Highway. He chose his experiment to discover how to slow down the erosion.
