Fire District 5 EMS levy needs more time

Published: 04/04/12 12:39:55

Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One does an outstanding job putting out fires and providing medical care in our community. The department has a stellar reputation for doing its job in a highly professional and competent manner, as evidenced by the fact the department has never had a levy fail, dating back to the 1970s. But we don’t quite understand the timing of Proposition 1, an Emergency Medical Services levy that will be on the April 17 ballot.

Make the next six weeks your moment

Published: 04/03/12 15:53:46

In a single moment, everything can change. My moment was when I sat in my doctor’s office a week after I had triple bypass surgery. I was 32 years old. My children were just 6 and 4. And when I asked my doctor about lifestyle changes I needed to make, he replied, “Don’t bother. With your aggressive heart disease and bad genes, I don’t think you’ll live to see 40.”

Online news, social media now the norm

Published: 03/27/12 15:00:55

THE WEEKLY newspaper isn’t just weekly anymore. In most cases, it’s part of a multimedia company that works to publish news when it happens, whether it’s online, through social media or another platform. We’ve certainly seen the change in the past few years, and we’re continuing to adapt on a daily basis.

Knowing tax credits may benefit business owners

Published: 03/27/12 15:00:31

As assistant associate administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, I travel throughout Washington and meet with small business owners. Many don’t realize that 17 small-business tax cuts already have been signed into law, and an additional five small-business tax cuts are proposed for 2013.

State budget a sorry lesson in politics

Published: 03/21/12 09:26:27

OUR STORY on Peninsula High School’s particpation in TVW’s “Capitol Classroom” program (see story here) details student exposure to the inner workings of the Washington State Legislature.

Or perhaps the word “workings” is not correct, given what is unfortunately becoming an annual tradition in Olympia: not producing a state budget on time.

Many factors go into discussion about toll rates

Published: 03/21/12 09:18:14

As a member of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Citizen Advisory Committee for the past three years, I’ve gained some perspective on the toll-setting process. What I’ve learned:
