A time to reflect on America's honored vets

Published: 05/23/12 11:14:56

This coming holiday weekend marks the traditional start of summer. While the long weekend will be devoted to shopping, family gatherings, travel and national media events, such as the Indianapolis 500, it behooves us to remember those who have died in military service to the nation.

It’s refreshing to see a feature on an African-American veteran

The morning newspaper delivered to my home on May 2 put a huge smile on my face.

We need a better response to threats of wild animals

Published: 05/22/12 21:44:01

There seem to be a lot more “lost pet” signs, posters and notifications than usual. I lost two Dachshund puppies last year from my fenced yard, and the Home Again Pet Rescuers — the people who monitor the chipped pets — are sending out three to six emails a week for our area.

People who rotate boats on public dock are modern-day pirates

Published: 05/22/12 21:44:00

Many of us in Gig Harbor who live, work, pay taxes and enjoy living in an amazing town are tired of the full-time liveaboards who don’t own or use a marina slip for their boats.

Incident reports come from police department

Published: 05/22/12 21:44:00

A reader walked into the office last week, curious about how we collect information for our police and fire reports that appear on our records page (today, it is B9). The reader was upset because his family member was involved in a car accident, and he felt the report we published didn’t accurately portray the scene.

Sunshine and warmer weather encourage us to get out more, whether it’s to garden, shop, take photos, visit friends or attend various activities. The Key Peninsula hosts many choices in the next few weeks.

Key Peninsula Fire District struggling with current resources

As chair of the Key Peninsula Fire District 16 Board of Commissioners, I want to thank the community for supporting our local fire department. Our new board is working cooperatively to deliver the best emergency services possible within a balanced budget.

Cheers & Jeers

CHEERS to the employee and/or shopper who returned my purse to the service counter at the new Safeway store. I discovered I'd left it in the small shopping cart at the return area in the middle of parking lot when I arrived home. Why didn't I just put a big note on it saying, "Take me?" Money, credit cards, checkbook, lipstick (very important), etc., all intact. I love you, honest person.

CHEERS to the post office letter carriers and patrons who supported the “Nice Day for a Drive’” food drive. Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank shelves will be refilled, and local families in need will receive much-needed food boxes as a result of your generosity.

Gig Harbor residents should take advantage of a pair of open-house events on major city projects — one tonight regarding the 56th Street/Point Fosdick Drive project, and one next week regarding the Rainier-Cascade water main improvement project.
