Gull or sea gull? Either way it is the same common bird

“Gull” or “sea gull”? That’s the question, and a good place to find the answer is in the dictionary. I use Webster’s New World Dictionary, Third College Edition. Both names are addressed. “… any of various shorebirds of a worldwide family (Laridae), with large wings, slender legs, webbed feet, a strong, hooked bill, and feathers of chiefly white and gray.” The name refers to the Cornish “gullan; the Welsh “gwylan, and the Bret (British) “gwelan.”

Activity among the birds is mixed during the month of June. There is the expected nursery activity throughout our yards, parks and all those places that maintain a healthy bird population. It seems that every other day another family introduces their youngsters to the world.

Joan Carson: Cooper’s hawk will soon learn to hunt properly

The loud calling overhead was startling and a bit of a mystery. It was one of those rare days when the weather is pleasant enough for me to attack those annoying weed patches. The calling bird shot through the yard like a rocket but was still easy to identify. Most of the time, the Cooper’s hawk is a silent hunter. Along with its look-a-like, the smaller sharp-shinned hawk, they are the most vocal near their nests.
