The new YMCA on the campus of the University of Washington Tacoma will open in January.
The $22 million building on the corner of South 17th and Market streets will house a fitness facility, as well as space for student activities.
The fitness operations open Jan. 1. The school plans a grand opening ceremony Jan. 6, from 5:30 p.m to 8:00 p.m. RSVPs are accepted through this link.
The Y is on the site of the former International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local No. 23 headquarters. UWT spokesman Mike Wark said in an email that the school worked with ILWU to commemorate the history of longshore workers on the waterfront and the heritage of the site with the creation of a mural that will be dedicated as part of the opening event.
UWT students pay for a YMCA membership as part of their student fees. That membership will gain them access to all YMCA facilities in Pierce and Kitsap counties.
