Narrows Marina has been named Marina of the Year by Marina Dock Age Magazine.
The national competition awards the title to one large and one small marina annually. This year’s small marina award went to Glen Cove Marina of Vallejo, California.
Narrows Marina, founded in 1949 and revitalized by owners Gordon Rush and Scott Wagner beginning in 2008, earned the award among large marinas nationwide.
Another South Sound enterprise, Dock Street Marina in Tacoma, earned the award in 2010.
Since changing ownership seven years ago, Narrows Marina has increased boater occupancy from 45 percent in 2008 to over 90 percent this year. Today the marina counts 215 slips, 237 boat lockers and over 112,000 square feet of indoor boat storage.
The facility also hosts businesses including Boathouse 19 Bar & Grill, Narrows Brewing Company, Narrows Marina Bait & Tackle Store, Aaron’s Marine Service and Street Styles Custom Upholstery. Before the revitalization project, the marina facility employed eight people full-time. In summer, including all of the businesses operating at the Narrows Marina, there are more than 170 employees, the marina said in a release.
