Delta Air Lines, rapidly expanding its new West Coast hub at Sea-Tac Airport, Monday announced a handful of new flights to destinations in the West from the airport.
The new service includes a new nonstop seasonal daily flight from Sea-Tac to Kona in Hawaii. That service will be flown by a Boeing 757.
Other expanded services include a second daily flight from Sea-Tac to Palm Springs, California, and a daily seasonal service to Tucson, Arizona. The airline now flies there only on Saturday. All three of these additional frequencies or new routes are scheduled to begin Dec. 19.
In other schedule enhancements, Delta announced it is expanding its seasonal service to Fairbanks and Juneau in Alaska to daily year-round service beginning May 15. The Atlanta-based carrier said it is also planning to offer expanded seasonal service from Sea-Tac nonstop to Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos in Mexico starting Oct. 3.
Never miss a local story.
Delta in the past 18 months has pumped up both its domestic and international schedules from Sea-Tac, becoming the second busiest carrier at the airport.
Delta said it has enhanced its domestic schedule to support its expanded repertoire of overseas flights from Sea-Tac. Delta’s international flight schedule offers more seats to international destinations from Sea-Tac than all other carrier combined. Delta flies from Sea-Tac nonstop to Amsterdam, Paris and London in Europe and to Hong Kong, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai and Tokyo’s two airports, Haneda and Narita from Sea-Tac.
On most of the domestic routes, Delta competes directly with Alaska Airlines, the SeaTac-based carrier whose main hub is at Sea-Tac. Thus far, Delta’s new competition seems to have little effect on Alaska which has expanded its domestic network by connecting Sea-Tac non-stop with several new destinations on the East Coast and in the Midwest including Milwaukee, Detroit, Oklahoma City, New Orleans and Tampa.
Alaska has also countered Delta’s Sea-Tac expansion with new flights to Delta hubs in Salt Lake City and Detroit.
By mid-summer, Delta says it will operate 126 daily flights from Sea-Tac.
