Longshore union members voted in California this week to enter into discussions with representatives of the Pacific Maritime Association regarding a potential contract extension. Union delegates from Bellingham to San Diego participated in the vote.
The maritime association proposed talks earlier this year for a contract that ends in 2019, said PMA spokesman Wade Gates in an email.
“As a next step, we will schedule a time in the next 30-60 days for PMA and ILWU leadership to discuss the topic,” Gates said.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union’s coast longshore division represents around 20,000 workers on the West Coast.
