A car being pursued by police struck a pole early Sunday, knocking out a signal system and closing two Highway 512 ramps and an overpass at Portland Avenue, the Washington State Patrol reported.
The car’s driver, a 20-year-old Tacoma man, was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence and felony eluding. He was ejected from his 1997 Acura RL when it hit the signal pole around 3 a.m. Sunday.
He was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, the State Patrol said. No report on his condition was available late Sunday. The News Tribune is not naming him because he hasn’t been charged with a crime.
Puyallup police began chasing the car westbound on Highway 512 at about 31st Avenue. When the driver attempted to exit at Portland Avenue, the car left the roadway and rolled over, striking the signal pole, the State Patrol reported.
The crash damaged the signal system, forcing the closure of the westbound 512 off-ramp to Portland Avenue, the westbound 512 onramp from Portland Avenue and the Portland Avenue overpass.
The ramps and overpass were reopened by noon Sunday.
A flagging crew from the Washington State Department of Transportation continued controlling traffic in the area until the signal repairs were completed about 2 p.m. Sunday.
