A 19-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries Tuesday night when a car hit him as he tried to cross Meridian near South Hill Mall, officials said Wednesday.

The man suffered head and internal injuries and was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, Puyallup police spokeswoman Lorri Ericson said. His condition was not known Wednesday.

The man and a friend were trying to cross Meridian near the 3300 block just after 5 p.m. They were not in a crosswalk, Ericson said. The friend made it across. A southbound car hit the victim.

Officers closed down part of Meridian to investigate the crash. The car’s driver was not cited at the scene, Ericson said. The investigation was continuing.
