A Fort Lewis soldier from California was killed early Wednesday when his pickup hit a guardrail and rolled on Interstate 5 in Tacoma, the Washington State Patrol reported.

The crash occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. and blocked the right two lanes of southbound I-5 at 72nd Street, the state Department of Transportation reported.

According to troopers, the man was driving south on I-5 when his truck left the roadway and struck a metal guardrail. He also hit a Department of Transportation sign, then rolled. He landed about 60 feet off the roadway, troopers reported.

The 19-year-old soldier died at the scene. The man’s name was not released because his family had not yet been told.
