A 59-year-old man was killed Tuesday night after he was hit by a pickup in Tacoma.
The collision occurred about 6 p.m. on South Sprague Avenue near South Seventh Street, police reported Wednesday.
The man had just picked up a pizza and was walking across Sprague when he dropped the box, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.
As the man stopped to pick up his pizza, the driver of a pickup heading down Sprague spotted him and slowed down.
“He was going to let the man finish crossing the street,” Fulghum said.
The pickup driver then decided to go around the man and slowly started to pass. As he did, the pedestrian leaned over, stumbled and went head-first into the front of the truck, police reported.
The driver remained at the scene, Fulghum said. He has not been cited.
The pedestrian was taken to Tacoma General Hospital where he died shortly before 9 p.m.
The man’s name has not yet been released because his family has not been notified.
