A 25-year-old man pleaded guilty Friday to killing his girlfriend’s 1-year-old daughter last year in a Parkland apartment.
Steven Andre Dwight Kendall pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, admitting that while assaulting Aaliyah Kahalewai he caused her death, deputy prosecutor Patrick Hammond said.
Kendall was taking care of Aaliyah in a Parkland apartment when she died July 25, 2008. The girl suffered “a massive blow” to her abdomen and “complex fractures of her skull,” court documents state.
Kendall initially told investigators Aaliyah fell several times that day and, at one point, he accidentally banged her head against the wall while holding her.
Aaliyah’s autopsy found the injuries were not consistent with the falls described by Kendall.
Kendall had no prior felony criminal history. He faces from 10 years, three months to 18 years, four months in prison. Hammond said he will be asking for the high end of the range.
Pierce County Superior Court Judge Brian Tollefson scheduled Kendall’s sentencing for Jan. 22.
