Herzing College, the Wisconsin school that is accepting students from Tacoma-based Crown College, will transfer credits from all Crown classes that students had earned a C or better in when the Tacoma school lost its national accreditation last month.

Ben Nirschl, senior admissions team leader for Herzing, said his school is also giving Crown students a tuition discount from the usual $375 per credit hour to $285 per credit, plus free textbooks and software. Since Crown’s fees didn’t include books and software, Herzing will end up being cheaper for the students, he said.

“We do not want to see any of these students without an option and have to start over,” Nirschl said. “We want all of them to just continue on.”

About 100 students were left in the middle of their studies when Crown shut down because it lost its accreditation in late July. That happened in part because its students weren’t getting jobs at the rate they should, according to the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology.

In addition, the U.S. Department of Education is investigating whether employees at Crown College stole thousands of dollars in federal financial aid before the school shut down. John Wabel, owner of the for-profit school, said it’s not true.
