Seven Pierce County schools honored

Washington state schools Superintendent Terry Bergeson honored seven Pierce County schools Wednesday for making gains in student reading and mathematics skills as well as general improvement in education.

They were among 86 statewide to receive the “School of Distinction” designation for what Bergeson called “outstanding” work.

The Pierce County schools honored were:

• Spanaway Elementary, Bethel School District.

• Carter Lake Elementary, Clover Park School District.

• Fruitland Elementary, Puyallup.

• Warren Hunt Elementary, Puyallup.

• Wildwood Elementary, Puyallup.

• Victor Falls Elementary, Sumner.

• Birney Elementary, Tacoma.

There are 51 elementary schools, 20 middle schools and 15 high schools on the Schools of Distinction list. The state has 2,500 public schools.

Each winning school met the current learning targets on both the reading and math WASL. Schools in that group were then evaluated for six-year gains on the state’s Learning Improvement Index, according to a news release.
