Drivers can expect significant delays on northbound Interstate 5 between Lacey and Lakewood this weekend.
Lane closures will squeeze traffic to one lane in portions of southern Pierce and northern Thurston counties.
The lane and ramp closures are needed for safety zones around the freeway repair projects, the state Department of Transportation said.
Crews were to set up a work zone in the Nisqually area Friday night and in Lakewood on tonight.
“If at all possible, avoid northbound I-5 in these areas when the work is going on,” said Kevin Dayton, a regional transportation administrator. “We’re strongly urging South Puget Sound commuters to use alternate routes or adjust your schedules.”
The $125,000 project is part of a larger effort to replace worn-out concrete panels before they break and result in emergency repairs.
Here’s what you need to know:
Nisqually: Work hours are 9 p.m. Friday to 11 a.m. today. Traffic will be reduced to one lane and the Nisqually on-ramp to northbound I-5 will be closed. Drivers are advised to use Marvin Road or Mounts Road to access northbound I-5.
Lakewood: Work hours are 8 tonight to noon Sunday. Traffic will be reduced to one lane and the Highway 512 on-ramp to northbound I-5 will be closed. Highway 512 drivers who want to get on northbound I-5 will detour to Bridgeport Way and back to the interstate.
Before you go: Check traffic conditions at www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic or call 511.
