Two people were hurt and a major Pierce County intersection blocked Thursday after a semitrailer lost its brakes and collided with two other vehicles at Canyon Road East and Pioneer Way East.
The wreck occurred about 12:30 p.m., sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
It appeared the semitrailer was traveling down the hill on Canyon, lost its brakes and slammed into an SUV and another truck on Pioneer.
The driver of the SUV was trapped for nearly 20 minutes before being freed by Central Pierce Fire & Rescue personnel.
One of the trucks was leaking fuel and oil and dumped its load of sand, Troyer said. Other drivers built barriers from the sand to keep the fuel from reaching a nearby creek, he added.
“We’ve got spilled fuel and ruptured fuel tanks,” Troyer said. “A lot of the time is going to be spent in the cleanup.”
Troyer said the people hurt in the wreck are expected to survive.
