A Tacoma Walmart employee accused of stealing from his till allegedly told detectives he took the money because he has debt, and wasn’t getting enough hours at the store.
Michael Steven Phillips, 21, pleaded not guilty to second-degree theft Wednesday, for allegedly taking what prosecutors say totalled $2,374 this month and last.
A store official saw footage of Phillips slipping $50 and $100 bills from the register on various shifts, and putting them into a return box, according to charging papers.
He allegedly would pocket the bills when he took the box to return the items.
Phillips told detectives he returned a $100 bill to the store official the day he realized he was being investigated, court records state. He took the money, according to charging papers, because he had a lot of debt and wasn’t getting enough hours.
