A commercial building in Spanaway burned and the fire threatened several nearby structures, according to Central Pierce Fire & Rescue.
The blaze was reported about 1:30 p.m. at Roy Y Auto Wrecking near 191st Street East and Pacific Avenue South.
Fire officials called for a second alarm because about a dozen mobile homes were threatened and the wind carried embers and started spot fires, spokesman Ed Hrivnak said.
Firefighters had the blaze knocked down Monday afternoon, but, “We’ve still got quite a few spot fires,” Hrivnak said.
No one was hurt.
A couple of the mobile homes appeared to have minor exterior damage, Hrivnak said. Residents were moved, and weren’t able to immediately return because of smoke.
Flammable material such as oil and metals in the business produced black smoke as the structure burned, Hrivnak said.
Firefighters didn’t close Pacific Avenue, but traffic backed up as drivers got distracted by the fire, Hrivnak said.
