To celebrate the acquisition by the city of the lighthouse property, Gig Harbor will host Senator Maria Cantwell and Congressman Derek Kilmer for a special ceremony and ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. Saturday on the sandspit and lighthouse property.
The event will take place at the sandspit, located at the mouth of Gig Harbor bay. The public is invited to attend the ceremony via marine access only.
The city invited Cantwell and Kilmer to celebrate the occasion after many years working to acquire the property, in which they were both instrumental during the process. The land, which is currently under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Coast Guard, became available after the Howard Coble Coast Guard and Marine Transportation Act of 2014 passed Congress in December. The Act included a provision transferring ownership of the property surrounding the lighthouse to the City of Gig Harbor.
The City of Gig Harbor would eventually like to have a park on the sand spit on which the lighthouse stands. Due to surrounding private property, the park would be a marine park accessible only from the water.
