Pierce County District 7 Council member Derek Young has been named to the Health Steering Committee of the National Association of Counties.
The association unites 3,069 county governments nationwide. Members of the committee work to advance legislative and policy priorities. The members participate in regular conference calls as well as stay up to date via email. Young will serve for one year.
A policy priority for Young is mental health, something he stressed as a major issue in the county during his campaign last year.
For Young, mental health care reform will benefit the county twofold. Most importantly, it will protect and help constituents who deal with mental health issues in their lives. While helping people, it also just makes fiscal sense, he said.
“If there’s a way we can help them stop the suffering, we can also help our budget,” Young said.
While mental health is a focus for Young, the committee also covers all areas of public health from water quality to Medicaid to long-term care.
“There’s public health in all policy,” he said.
