Team Stambaugh, as the owners call themselves, has been building confidence in men and women of all ages since opening the doors of their downtown Sumner business, You Impression, in 2012. The main focus of the business, owned by sisters Kristina and Melanie Stambaugh with their mother Tina, is to help clients increase confidence and celebrate who they are while reaching their goals.
A former interior designer, Tina was able to get to know her clients by understanding their habits and routines — getting to know their families. As client after client would often begin to share about their teenagers during design consultations, Tina was asked if she would talk with their children, since she not only understands teens, but is compassionate toward young adults.
“Some even said, ‘I’ll pay you to talk to them,’” she said. “It really planted a seed in me. I just kept telling Kristina that I wanted to open a business like this.”
Kristina, a former radio DJ, was looking for a way to have more of a relationship with people, instead of just being in a DJ booth talking with people over the air. Now the trio has what they call the best job ever.
“Our clients really are like family to us,” Kristina said.
Melanie, a state Representative (R-Puyallup) for the 25th District, balances her time between her office in Olympia and at the Stambaugh’s downtown Sumner business.
“It’s challenging. There is a lot of going in between my office here in Olympia, and You Impression,” Melanie said. “My heart is really in both places. It makes it worth while seeing our clients succeed. I accept the challenge with great excitement.”
Combining their skills, the Stambaugh women bring something different to the table, to offer confidence coaching on what ever their client may need to focus on. Melanie, 24, is what they call the arrow of the business, using her business skills gleaned from her years attending the University of Washington and her communication skills to connect with clients. Tina, 54, is described as the heart of You Impression, inspiring others to live as their authentic self. Kristina, 28, is called the diamond of the group, with her encouraging spirit and commitment to have a little fun along the way.
“Between the three of us, there’s always someone to match our clients,” Kristina said.
You Impression offers confidence coaching to clients ranging from individuals to business and corporate clients, to pageant contestants and athletes. The trio focuses on confidence coaching in the following areas: leadership, branding, manners, professional development and advancement, student performance, self image, pageant and sports.
Kenney Hayes, executive director of the Miss Pierce County Scholarship Program, has used the confidence coaching business for contests in many different roles, and says she has seen great results in the young women her organization serves.
“My favorite thing about You Impression is how they meet each person where they are and coach them to do things they didn’t think they could do,” she said. “They find that inside voice of our title holders that may have been hidden for years, and somehow bring it out wrapped in confidence and assurance.”
According to the Stambaughs, confidence coaching pertaining to pageants, professional development and sports is very similar.
“Confidence really transcends all areas,” Tina said. “Often when our clients meet, they are surprised at how similar each other’s worlds are. Confidence is aligning your heart and mind with deliberate focus. In this way, sports confidence is very similar to pageant confidence. The activity is different, but the process to achieve the goal is the same.”
Back when You Impression started nearly three years ago, Tina confesses that at the beginning, things were very touch and go. As a seasoned interior designer, her client base was what kept her going, but building clients for her new business proved to be a challenge.
“Inch by inch, everything is a cinch,” Tina said.
Once Melanie came in and helped the team develop a business plan and helped create all the graphics for the business, things finally took off.
Now, the Stambaugh women are debt free when it comes to owning and operating their business, and serve clients from Seattle all the way to Shelton, helping celebrate their lives and the goals they have reached.
For each client the Stambaughs take under their wing to inspire confidence in, a 30-minute boost happens, where clients talk about their goal and the Stambaughs decide if the confidence coaching offered would be a good fit. Following the 30-minute boost, most clients select three, 75-minute confidence coaching sessions. Seminars and workshops are also held in the You Impression studio and at off-site locations.
