It’s that time again for local athletes to get their baseline concussion testing done for the 2015-2016 athletic season.
ATI Physical Therapy, which partnered with the Puyallup School District, started its baseline concussion testing Saturday for next year. ATI has established Wednesdays and Saturdays as its designated days to take on the nearly 1,500 athletes in the area.
“The importance of a baseline test is to find what the person’s brain function looks like prior to a concussion,” said Josh Waltier, director of Sports Medicine at ATI.
Baseline testing is to help athletes get back on the field as quickly and as healthy as the medical personnel can help them. If the brain does become damaged in some capacity, doctors will need to know what each individual athlete brain looks before the injury.
Every person’s brain functions differently.
“One athlete’s brain is different from another, and we won’t know that if they don’t get tested,” Waltier said. “We want to return (an) athlete’s brain function back to normal for that individual.”
Even if an athlete has never suffered a head injury or brain trauma of any kind, it’s important not to pass up this chance to get a baseline concussion test done.
Besides being a requirement to play sports in the Puyallup School District, it’s important to have one done nonetheless.
Living as healthy of a life possible is the most important aspect people can grasp onto.
“I have to say that the Puyallup School District has been a big supporter in all this,” Waltier said. “They’re at the forefront of keeping their athletes healthy, and that’s important for us doctors, who want to get (those injured) back as soon as possible.”
ATI will be conducting its baseline concussion testing through May 16.
