High winds fanned a house fire Thursday on Tacoma’s east side, but about four people got out of the home safely, firefighters said.
“We were fighting both the fire and the elements,” said Tacoma Fire Department spokesman Jim Meinecke.
Flames and smoke were showing when crews arrived shortly after 4 p.m. at the house in the 2000 block of East 35th Street. Wind accelerated the blaze, a challenge faced at several house fires in the city throughout the day, Meinecke said.
Wind gusts as high as 25 mph were recorded by the National Weather Service at Joint Base Lewis-McChord on Thursday.
Crews had the fire extinguished by about 6 p.m. A cause had not yet been determined.
