Authorities shut down northbound Interstate 5 in Lakewood during Monday evening’s commute while they rescued a man threatening to jump onto the freeway from an overpass.
Crews blocked off the lanes about 4:30 p.m. and started diverting traffic to Bridgeport Way Southwest as officers spoke with the man.
The traffic backup on the northbound freeway reached 5 miles about 5 p.m.
About half an hour later, officers got the man off the overpass safely and reopened the road.
The man was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
