Puyallup police officers flushed a man with a gun out of the brush along state Route 512 late Sunday and arrested him on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The 23-year-old man was carrying a handgun when he was spotted outside a restaurant near South Hill Park Drive and 31st Avenue Southwest about 7:45 p.m., police said.
He fled into some nearby woods when police were called.
Officers ordered customers of local businesses and people attending a nearby church to shelter in place while police searched for the man.
The Metro SWAT team eventually joined the hunt and ordered the evacuation of some buildings. State Route 512 and some other streets were closed to traffic during the search.
Officers found the man several hours later and took him into custody without further incident, police said.
