Eight residents of a Tacoma four-plex escaped without injury Friday after an early-morning fire destroyed their building.
The blaze broke out about 3:30 a.m. in a three-story house in the 4100 block of South M Street. The house had been converted into apartments.
The second and third floors were fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived.
Investigators believe a discarded cigarette likely caused the fire.
“The neighbor upstairs came beating on the door,” resident Richard Hastings told KIRO-TV. “We were in bed sleeping. I didn’t see anything. I just grabbed my clothes, put them on and ran out the back door.”
