Six families arrived at a South Hill home Monday, excited to move in, only to find out they’d all been duped in a rental theft scheme.
Pierce County sheriff’s detectives are looking for a 38-year-old woman suspected of stealing more than $12,000 from the families.
The News Tribune is not naming the woman because she has not been charged with a crime and no arrest warrant has been issued for her.
The woman listed a three-bedroom house on 139th Ave. Ct. E. for rent on Craigslist.com two weeks ago. She was asking $1,275, according to the ad.
Each of the six victims met with her to tour the home, filled out rental applications, gave the woman a $2,000 deposit and arranged to move in Monday.
When they arrived, none of the families could get into the house or reach the homeowner. Neighbors told the victims that the home is in foreclosure.
