A stage 1 burn ban went into effect Wednesday in Pierce and Snohomish counties.
The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency said the ban is needed to reduce pollution in the air.
A stage 1 burn ban means no burning is allowed in wood-burning fireplaces, uncertified wood stoves or fireplace inserts.
Residents with no other adequate heat source can be excluded from the ban but must have approval from the agency.
Outdoor fires are also prohibited.
Violations can mean a $1,000 penalty.
