Fire crews evacuated an industrial block near one of the main gates to Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s McChord Air Field on Thursday after an explosion ignited a fire at a Lakewood auto parts shop.
No one was hurt in the explosion or fire at the Pick N Pull car parts shop, 2416 112th St. S., said West Pierce Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Jenny Weekes.
A Pick N Pull vendor told fire officials the explosion happened in a storage tank. He was operating a nearby gas pump when the tank exploded, setting off a fire and throwing him high into the air.
The man appeared unhurt when medics took a look at him, Weekes said.
Never miss a local story.
The fire was reported about 3:30 p.m. and was contained about 5 p.m.
It’s not not immediately clear what material in the tank triggered the explosion, Weekes said. Crews from the state Department of Ecology were expected to investigate the incident.
Crews from West Pierce Fire and Rescue and JBLM evacuated businesses near 112th and Steele street south. They also shut down 112th Street South.
Traffic was backed up at the air field and fire officials advised drivers to avoid the area.
