A 46-year-old man found burning outside a Spanaway business Thursday night was in critical condition Friday.
Several fast-food workers looked across the street about 10:30 p.m. and thought they saw a building on fire in the 15000 block of Pacific Avenue South.
“They ran over, and it was actually a person on fire,” Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
The workers helped douse the last of the fire, which had burned the man’s clothes off.
The victim, a transient in the Spanaway area, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with significant burns.
Detectives have not determined how the fire started.
“He made a statement to one of the fast-food workers that somebody lit him on fire, but we have not been able to talk to him,” Troyer said.
Anyone who might have seen something or have information on the incident can call Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
