Investigators are trying to determine what started a fire Wednesday at a commercial building in Kent.
Firefighters were called at 4:25 p.m. to a building in the 300 block of Lincoln Avenue South and found smoke pouring from the structure. The blaze, which started in the loft area, took about 20 minutes for crews to extinguish.
Capt. Kyle Ohashi said it did not appear that a business was being operated inside the building, but the department could not locate the owner.
It’s believed that squatters periodically stayed in the building and brought several items inside with them, Oshashi said. It’s unknown whether those items contributed to the fire.

A city employee spotted a person leaving the area near the blaze and reported it to police, who interviewed the person. No arrests were made.
