A man impaled under his eye by a nail was flown from Eatonville to Seattle for treatment Thursday, South Pierce Fire & Rescue said.
Deputy Fire Chief Chris Grant said he thought the 29-year-old was hurt while building a fence.
The nail was tied to the end of a string used to help set the fence line, Grant said. Someone accidentally pulled on the string, causing it to recoil and throw the nail into the man’s face, Grant said.
It wasn’t immediately clear where the accident happened beyond being in the Eatonville area, Grant said.
Never miss a local story.
Crews were called about 12:45 p.m. when the man walked into the MultiCare Eatonville Clinic at 118 Washington Ave. N.
The injury was not life-threatening, but emergency crews opted to airlift the man to Harborview Medical Center, because the nail was close enough to his eye and brain that driving could have been dangerous, Grant said.
