A Lakewood man allegedly cut the brake line on his girlfriend’s truck after she refused to get an abortion, according to court documents.
Justin Herrick, 31, pleaded not guilty Thursday to attempted first-degree assault and third-degree malicious mischief. He was ordered jailed in lieu of $300,000 bail.
His girlfriend called Pierce County sheriff’s deputies Wednesday after she found fluid near a front tire and a cut brake line.
The couple broke up after Herrick allegedly asked his girlfriend, who was seven weeks pregnant, to get an abortion. She told him to move out and return her truck, charging papers state.
After Herrick dropped the truck off Wednesday and picked up his things, the girlfriend drove it down a gravel road and found it had no brakes. She turned around and parked the truck on an uphill driveway without crashing.
She “believed the defendant tried to kill her and their unborn child,” documents state. “Her roommate confirmed the defendant had pliers or wire cutters in his back pocket that day.”
Deputies went to Herrick’s work to speak with him and arrested him.
Herrick initially denied cutting the brake line, but eventually admitted it and allegedly said he didn’t think the truck would start with a severed brake line.
