Lakewood police said they will release information Monday about the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Daniel Covarrubias by two of the department’s officers last month.
The officers shot Covarrubias on April 21 at Pinnacle Lumber & Plywood, 9401 Lakewood Drive SW.
Police haven’t released the officers’ names or said if a weapon was found at the scene. It’s not clear if the officers are still on paid administrative leave or back at work.
Interim Police Chief Mike Zaro scheduled a press conference for 1 p.m. Monday to talk about the shooting.
Covarrubias was being evaluated at St. Clare Hospital for hallucinations before he was shot. It’s possible he was walking home when people reported to police that he hopped the lumberyard fence.
The two officers found him on top of a 25-foot pile of lumber, and fired after telling dispatchers he was reaching into his pocket.
He died later at a hospital.
