Tacoma police on Friday released the name of the officer who fatally shot a 48-year-old man May 10 in an incident that began as a noise complaint.
The officer, Jimmy Welsh, 34, has worked for the department for six years. A department statement said he has been placed on paid administrative leave — standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting.
According to initial reports, neighbors called police to complain about loud music coming from an address in the 3400 block of South Proctor Street. The resident at the address, Stephen Cunningham, reportedly stepped out of the house when officers arrived and pointed a gun at them.
Welsh ordered Cunningham to stop, police said. Cunningham refused, kept walking forward and kept pointing the gun. Welsh shot him.
Officers called for medical aid. Cunningham was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers recovered his gun, which was loaded, police said.
The investigation of the incident is continuing, police said.
