The search for a missing scuba diver who didn’t resurface, during her first open water dive, near Les Davis Pier in Tacoma was called off Thursday.
Authorities have identified the diver only as a 50-year-old Portland woman.
She went into the water about 1 p.m. with a group. Someone called 911 shortly afterward to report seeing a diver in distress. When the other divers resurfaced, they realized the woman was missing.
Multiple agencies sent divers, boats and aircraft to search a wide area for the diver. The U.S. Coast Guard called off the search Thursday morning after crews did one last check for signs of the woman.
“The decision to suspend a search is difficult and our thoughts are with the missing person and her family at this time,” said Commander Brian Meier, chief of response at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound.
He said the search might resume if searchers receive information about where the diver might be.
