A 40-year-old man died Saturday when the homemade pipe-bomb fireworks he was making for the Fourth of July exploded, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
“This one went off while he was manufacturing it, and shrapnel got into his body and killed him,” Troyer said.
It happened about 9 p.m. east of Orting, in the 20900 block of 175th Street Court East.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded, Troyer said.
The man’s name had not yet been released by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office, pending notification of family.
