As fireworks lit up the skies Saturday evening, firefighters worked to extinguish a house fire in downtown Puyallup and another in Edgewood.
The Puyallup fire started at about 8:05 p.m. at a home located in the 1700 block of West Pioneer Avenue. Investigators with Central Pierce Fire and Rescue were still working to determine the cause of the fire Saturday night.
As of about 10:40 p.m., firefighters had contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to nearby trees and houses, said Ed Hrivnak, spokesman for Central Pierce. But crews were still working to put out small fires in the attic of the one-story rambler, he said.
While the home sustained significant damage, “it’s not a complete loss,” Hrivnak said.
Also on Saturday, East Pierce Fire and Rescue said its crews saved a home from a fast-moving brush fire in the Sumner Heights area of Edgewood. That home was located in the 5100 block of Monta Vista Drive East, the fire agency reported on Twitter.
The Puyallup fire was the first structure fire that Central Pierce firefighters responded to on the July 4 holiday, after putting out nearly 40 brush fires since 5 a.m., Hrivnak said.
Hrivnak said more fires broke out than usual this July 4th holiday due to unusually dry and warm conditions for the time of year.
“We are really struggling to keep up with the amount of small brush fires that are stating up from fireworks,.” Hrivnak said Saturday night. “The county is really starting to light up. Our engines are running from call to call.”
Hrivnak said Sunday could see even more fires, especially since residents in unincorporated Pierce County are allowed to set off fireworks on July 5 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Weather conditions Sunday are expected to be dry, windy and even more conducive to sparking fires, he said.
“We’re really worried about tomorrow,” Hrivnak said.
Also Saturday night, the Puyallup Police Department said units were responding to another house fire in the Crystal Ridge neighborhood of Puyallup. No details were available about that fire as of 11:15 p.m.
